Institutions

What is a Music Institution?

A music institution is the company or business which will fund the video for the artist, and this is what the viewer will watch.

There are many different companies which will fund music videos for various artists. Some of these companies are;
  • Universal Music Group
  • Sony Music
  • EMI
  • Warner Music Group

New Song Title - Music Video

I held a focus group and the feedback that I got was that I should change 'What do you Mean' at the beginning of the song to 'Stay High' as it would make more sense. This is the changed video.

Song Change Explanation

As my song for my music video for a very long time was Justin Bieber's 'What do you Mean', it is the Digipak name, however while making the video, I changed my song choice as I felt that the song 'Stay High' by Hippie Sabotage went better. This song is an indie pop or trip pop genre song. I have added 'Stay High' onto my list of songs on the digipak.

Lyrics

Copyright for Stay High

The production company for Hippie Sabotage's song 'Stay High' was The Struts.
I emailed them to ask whether I could use their song for my music video. Above is the evidence.

Information

I have made my video, and due to the music not going with my music video I have changed the music again. I am doing my music video to Hippie Sabotage's song 'Stay High'.

The video is about a drunken and drugged giraffe who is dreaming about what he did in the fields. Everything around him is changing colours and seems surreal because of the drugs, and this is also showing the difference between the dream and reality. After the giraffe has been dancing around the field, he falls over and then passes out.

The music and the effect then changes and everything goes back to normal. In a dimmed room, the giraffe wakes up, covered in recreational drugs. He then stumbles around and takes some pills, only to pass out again and have the dream replay in reverse.

The reason I changed my music is because the video that I ended up making did not match the song or the genre in any way. I felt that a song about alcohol/drugs/emotions would be more relatable to the video and seemed more effective about what the story was about. I only got inspiration for what I really wanted to do while filming the first half of my music video, so while editing my video, I decided that a music change would have been appropriate to demonstrate the emotions and effects of drugs and alcohol that I was representing. The reason I stuck with a giraffe is because I wanted the video to be different and subvert the typical conventions. It also demonstrates how being on drugs can make people seem different to the ideal society.

Problems?

Throughout the coursework process, I have had multiple issues ranging from coming up with ideas to the actual creating of my products. These past couple of weeks, although my video has been completed, I have had trouble with posting my video in order for me to have any feedback or for it to be marked. When I originally tried posting the video onto YouTube the video would not upload, however when it finally did, I tried watching it through and half way through, the screen just goes blank for the entirety of the video.

I then tried to put the video onto a disk to bring it into my school and show people, however my sibling broke the CD/DVD drive which meant that I could not insert the disk into the computer, therefore meaning that I couldn't get the video onto the disk. This meant that I tried emailing the video to another email address of mine to use on another computer, however the file was too big to send.

Then I tried putting the video onto a USB, however when I opened the file (video) on another computer, the video would not play as the majority of the clips that made the video had been corrupted.

Evaluation Question Four

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Benefits
Difficulties
Blogger
The benefits of using websites such as Blogger is that I could keep my teachers up to date with what I had done. I could post images and get feedback about whether these photos were appropriate for the use of my media products.

Blogger has enabled me to produce better work because I was able to get feedback about what it was that I needed to add in to complete my work to the required standard.
The difficulties of using Blogger is that while working on the video or digipak, I would not update the blog and it would seem like I had not been doing the work.

Another difficulty was if the internet wasn’t working then there was no way of doing or updating the blog.

One other difficulty was that I would often not be able to upload images and videos to Blogger as the files were not supported within the schools system or by the website and this meant that a lot of what I wanted to upload to blogger has not been uploaded.
Prezzi
Using Prezzi is an effective way of presenting all of the information I needed to in a structured order and there was no limit to how much I could add.

It was very simple and easy to use, and therefore made the presentation very easy to read, watch, and understand.

Prezzi enabled me to produce better work as presenting through Prezzi is different from just simply writing all information in essay form.

Prezzi also helped me whilst I was researching because it was all laid out in a way which made the information easier to understand. For example, if I was researching something such as the different music video genres, Prezzi could have a different slide on each different type of genre, with mini-slides and images to reinforce understanding of the definitions.

The URL of the Prezzi can be copied and used through any other website. For example, one of my evaluation questions was presented through a Prezzi, and it is posted onto Blogger. This is easier than having to copy and paste a web link and wait for the page to load, and sometimes the web-pages do not load or will say they are expired. As the Prezzi is on Blogger, there is not any way for it not to be visible to anyone who views my blog.
However, the difficulties of using Prezzi (for example, when researching) could be that the information on the websites may not be reliable as Prezzi’s are made by the public and could therefore be their interpretation of the actual definition. This could lead to inaccurate work due to a false definition or belief.

Prezzi could also pose some difficulty to use if the internet wasn’t working as it is online. This would mean that while making my own Prezzi, if the internet wasn’t working, then I would not be able to work on the Prezzi that day.

Finally, if the internet stopped working while I was working on the Prezzi, then any work that had been done but not saved would be lost. This is not a major issue however is an inconvenience when trying to complete work.
Mobile Phones
Mobile phones were very beneficial when doing audience research and getting feedback while planning my video.

Mobile phones have got Social Media apps on them, which are always to hand as mobiles are portable and therefore always with the owner of the mobile. Apps such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pintrest are all on phones (or are downloadable for smart phones). This means that if I had an idea and wasn’t on a computer and needed feedback on my idea, then I could put it online and would get a response either agreeing or disagreeing (sometimes with suggestions commented) with my idea.

Through being able to communicate with the public at all times about my music video, I had an idea of what they would or would not enjoy watching.

I used the social media platform Facebook to get feedback on the best font to use for my digipak through posting an image displaying multiple fonts and asking people which one was their favourite. Through getting this sort of feedback, I was learning how to get my potential audience interested and make them want to buy the product. It has to be aesthetically pleasing for them to want to buy it.

Using social media allowed me to take onboard any constructive criticism and use it to improve my products where it was necessary.
However using mobile phones can be hard to use because there is always the chance that people won’t comment or give feedback on the question as they haven’t seen the post. This would then lead me to then have to use other social media platforms in order to get a response which means that the response isn’t happening instantly, which is what is expected when using social media.

Another difficulty of using social media was miscommunication. Sentences can be interpreted differently, especially when reading them rather than hearing them. This lead people to interpret their own meaning of a question and not give the answer I was necessarily searching for. I asked people which font was they thought would look most appropriate for my digipak, and one person didn’t choose one of the fonts I had shown, but commented a description of the type of font they imagined being used for this genre. However all feedback is beneficial, so although I may not have got the result I was hoping for when asking people what font they thought suited my digipak, I still got feedback which could have opened my eyes to more possibilities.
Computers
Without a computer, I would not have been able to complete any work at all. Using a computer allowed me to have access to the internet to use Blogger and keep my progress up to date, as well as doing my research and audience research. Planning was not necessary to do online, however it did keep everything in one place. If I was to do all of my planning on paper, I would have probably lost some parts of my planning or it wouldn’t be organised, and nobody would be able to see everything that I had been doing.

Using a computer also gave me the opportunity to use Photoshop for my digipak and Adobe Premier to edit the video.

Using a computer also allowed me to use different media types when making my evaluation, which would not have been possible if I had not had access to a computer.
However, when using a computer for Blogger, I would often begin making posts and not have time to finish them in lesson. As I wanted to finish the work before posting it, there would sometimes be confusion about whether my work was completed as I hadn’t yet posted it.

My computer in school didn’t have enough memory to save any more work which meant that every time I had to use Photoshop, my work would often be lost leaving me to have to start again. The next day or just redo the last few changes of a bit of my digipak. This became a big difficulty when using the computers.
Camera’s
Using the camera was the best way to film my music video. Using my phone would not have been as clear and therefore not as professional. Using the camera allowed me to make my video look more professional and I could zoom in as far as I needed to while filming which would have been difficult on my mobile as it would have wobbled the screen where there is not anything to make the mobile camera’s zoom in smoothly.

The camera was also beneficial because it had a stand which I needed when I was out filming because otherwise the filming would have been all wobbly and shaking, which I needed in the second half of my video but while the camera was meant to be still, the stand was useful.

When I needed the video to seem a bit dazed, the camera lens could go out of focus which gave the effect of the giraffe being dazed. That shot would have been much harder to do without the camera.
The camera that I was using was being shared between the two media classes, and therefore I had to plan in advance or plan around when the camera was free, or ensure that the students using the camera would be finished by the day they said that they would be. This made filming take slightly longer because I changed my video idea three times which meant I had to try filming with the camera three times too. This became difficult.
Photoshop
Photoshop was good to use for my digipak because it allowed me to do anything I wanted with the images I had taken. For example, my digipak cover has a duplicate of my artist, which was done through using Photoshop. It also allowed me to put the chosen font onto the digipak, which would have been very difficult to do and wouldn’t have looked as professional if I had used another program.

Photoshop allowed me to delete the background of the font and put it over the digipak images in order to give the artist and album a name.
The difficulties of using Photoshop were that the program would sometimes freeze, and work would be lost because of this. It was also difficult to learn how to use all of the tools, however this did become easier and creating the digipak and poster became much easier.
Google (DaFont)
Using Google search and going onto websites such as DaFont enabled me to have thousands of more fonts as an option for my digipak. This meant that I had many so much more opportunity to get the perfect font to match my genre and style of the digipak and music video.

Without using DaFont, the font on my digipak would have been very dull in comparison because the fonts on that website can be very different to other fonts which are on every installed computer program.
It could be very difficult to find the exact font that I wanted because some of them had differences which meant that it wasn’t how I pictured it.

Some of the fonts would not say what I wanted because it would not change what it said, therefore making the font unusable which was a nuisance because sometimes I would really like a font and have to overlook it and choose another, which may not look as good as the other font.

Reflections

The song I am making my music video to is Justin Bieber's 'What do you Mean?'.

The reason I have chosen to do my video to this song is because it is a song which has a good beat to dance to, which works with the concept of my video which is a giraffe dancing around the streets.
This will appeal to my target audience, which varies from young children to middle aged people. This is because the video is upbeat, fun and different, which would capture people's attention and as it is a very clean video, it is appropriate for everyone to watch.

My video is going to subvert the usual conventions of a pop and dance music video because usually (in a pop music video) there will be a visual link between the video and the lyrics because otherwise the video would not make any sense and people wouldn't want to watch it as they would be confused and think it's irrelevant. Not only this, but having something visual to relate to will help the people to remember the lyrics which therefore makes the song even more popular.

In pop and dance music videos, the lighting is usually very bright, as well as the clothing being very bright to make it eye catching and appeal to the target audience. The reason why the clothes are bright and vibrant are because it gives the impression to the target audience that the people are lively and this is something that the young people are attracted to. The vibrant clothes are always fashionable at the time, which is another reason why the video would appeal to younger people as fashion is usually something very important to younger people. Having the bright colours and happy people gives the audience a feel good feeling. This appeals to the target audience as they are young and just want to have a good time, and these videos might be making them remember some of the memories they have had at parties.

When making pop music videos, the artists are usually young which is very relatable for the audience. In pop and dance music videos, there are usually some referencing to the artist's name to establish who the song is by. This makes the artist more well known and then the target audience will remember the artists name and become a fan of the artist and their songs.

Within pop videos, there are usually lots of performance scenes, as well as narrative. The reason why there are often some performance scenes is because the narrative video would become boring to watch, and the artists are performers, therefore they should be performing to show off their talent and be taken seriously through their talent.

Dance music videos are usually filmed in lively atmospheres such as in clubs or parties so the genre of music matches the video.

The way my video will subvert the typical conventions of a dance and pop music video is because my artist is not wearing 'fashionable' clothing as they're wearing a giraffe outfit. The filming will not be happening at a party, club, studio or anywhere where a music video is typically filmed, which is another demonstration of how my video subverts the typical conventions of a music video.

Potential Digipak Images

The pictures below are ones which I took when preparing for my digipak. Some of them were better than others, and therefore more appropriate for use. I went to two different locations with brick walls for the background as I was not sure which kind of brick wall would have looked better for my kind of music video. One brick wall was lighter and more worn away. The space in front of it was very open also, which meant that the sunlight could hit the wall more than in the other location.
The other brick wall was darker and more blocked off, which meant that the sun could not reach the wall as much. This gave the photos a darker and gloomier effect - however, this was not the desired effect.
Photo's I like/probably will use:

My artist in this photo is very serious and I like the pose. This was one of the photo's that I quite liked (there are a couple of similar photos). However one negative to this photo is the leaves growing out of the ground as I feel that this ruins the photo, and may make the photo unuseable.

Once again, I like this photo for various reasons such as the pose. I like that my artist is looking off of the screen. I would have liked him to have seemed more cheerful as I think he seems deep in thought here, however I still really like the photo.

Out of all of the photos where my artist is posing in this way, this one is my favourite as he is looking directly into the camera, and the pose is perfect. His face isn't too angry however he is not too cheerful which was the look I was going for. His face contrasts his outfit which adds something different to my genre type.

I really like these photos because he looks very casual, relaxed and 'typically cool'. the wall and floor is very clean and I like the look of the photo. The only thing about this photo is that there is a drain in the very corner, however I could crop that part of the photo out and still use the image, as I really like it. The image fits the genre and looks professional.

This photo is at the previous wall and I like the closeness and personal side of this image. It looks like the artist is connecting with the audience in an intense way. He sort of looks intimidating which would be perfect for some genres. I like this image however I would need to try and see whether I could make it work for my digipak.

Once again I like this image, however his face is very serious to the point where he seems angry. This is not suitable for my music video and genre.

Photos I dislike/am unlikely to use:

My artist is looking completely off of screen, but also not engaging the audience. His arms are crossed which could imply that he isn't bothered about being there, he is bored or he is feeling down or aggressive. This image is not a good one due to the pose, body language and facial expressions being used. I also do not like the way the artist's leg is placed.

One again, my artist looks bored, his feet are placed weirdly which makes the image seem off, and I just generally dislike the image. I do not think this is aesthetically pleasing. Personally if I saw this image on a CD cover or a magazine, I would not want to buy the product.

The reason why I dislike the two images above is because I feel like the artist seems disinterested and I don't like the pose or the placement of the artist on the screen. In the second image, the brick layout is off and I just dislike the two images.

Bradley

Above is Bradley. He looks very serious and nothing like the 'character' he is going to be, however he is a drama student and has many different character roles that he is capable of playing so I believe that Bradley is the perfect artist. He is not camera shy which is brilliant as it will be very easy to direct him when filming.

Bradley looks very good in different styles of clothing which is good as I can then get him to dress in any way (even an animal costume).

My Performers Clothes

My performer will be wearing an animal onesie. This is completely subverting from the original video as the outfit is weird and unusual which is partly why I think that the video would be successful. As it is different, it will make people speak about it and show their friends or family, and maybe even share it on social media.

Through making a music video that is completely different to conventional music videos, it will capture people's attention.

He will be wearing this sort of onesie, and because he is going publicly around London in this outfit, people would be surprised as it is not a 'normal' outfit to go out in public in.

It is also amusing seeing a wild animal do everything that a human would do, and this would be going against the typical conventions of a music video which only consists of people dancing or following a storyline.

Song Choice

The song I have chosen to use is Justin Bieber's 'What do you Mean?'. This is because it is an upbeat song, and I am able to let the artist have fun, as well as having a storyline to it.

The genre of this song is pop or tropical house.

The style of clothing that the performers in the original video wore were quite casual, the type of clothing that people could wear on a daily basis. Justin Bieber wore a white t-shirt, a black hoodie, ripped jeans and some slip on trainers. This is because he is at a skate park, therefore showing that he is representing a teenage boy who enjoys skating, he is dressed to fit the scene.

When he is in the bedroom, he is wearing the same outfit (without the hoodie).

HAZARD OBSERVED
RISK BEFORE CONTROL MEASURES

E.g. Injury, death, separated  from group
PERSONS AT RISK

CONTROL MEASURES

How to prevent these risks from happening.
Traffic accident.

Injury, shock, in serious cases – death, and maybe separation from the group if someone has to go to the hospital.
Everyone, the person filming (me) and the people who will be in my video (the artists).
I could try to keep my group away from the busy roads and go to the places in London which are less busy than some of the other places in London. This means that the traffic wouldn't be as bad.
Travelling on Foot.

Injury and separation from group.
Everyone.
Either everyone has to stick together and there should be a meeting point in case someone gets lost, or get a cab/drive to the location.
Use of public transport: Trains
Getting lost, separation
The people on the train.
One again, make sure everyone is together when getting on the trains and tubes. Have a meeting point on the platform to make sure everyone is there before getting on the trains and tubes.
Exposure to weather.

Sun burn, heatstroke, makeup running, hypothermia, snow may make people stranded.
The people outside, who I am working with.
Have everyone wear sun cream if the weather is hot and sunny and have people wrap up really warm if it is cold. Put on lots of layers to avoid being too cold.
Illness or injury.

When walking someone may fall or twist an ankle.
Unable to do the video due to health issues.
Person could be contagious.
Anyone.

Are there going to be public people there?

Might come into the shot.
Confrontation.

The people I am filming
I could go to backroads where not many people go to, to avoid being around lots of the public. This could avoid confrontation and gives me the opportunity to have a clearer shot.
Am I going to be filming on anyone’s land?

No.

Do I have permission to film where I am?

It is is an open area, therefore there is nobody to ask because there is no specific owner of the land.

Crossing the road.

A car may not see the person and therefore not have enough time to slow down.
Everyone, the person filming (me) and the people who will be in my video (the artists).
Don't allow anyone to cross the road when it is not safe. Only cross at pedestrian crossings and look multiple times before actually going.

Try to avoid the busiest roads in London.
Is there a possible terrorist threat.
Yes.
Everyone, the person filming (me) and the people who will be in my video (the artists).
Don't go to London to ensure that everyone is going to be safe.
